Media Operations and Public Relations for Defence and Law Enforcement Employees fulfil the defence and interior ministries obligations to keep citizens, stakeholders and the media informed and helps to establish the conditions that lead to confidence in law enforcement and the military and its readiness to conduct operations to safeguard citizens.

This five-day training course by KC Academy provides attendees with an intensive overview of the crucial elements required to ensure defence and law enforcement employees communicate effectively to both internal and external stakeholders.

During this five-day training course, you will learn:

  • The fundamentals of Media and Communications including news-writing, imagery, working with journalists, interview training and crisis communications.
  • How to ensure media and communication and information operations personnel from across defence bodies work together to support the organisation's strategic objectives.
  • An awareness of the current and emerging media environment and skills for personnel who are likely to be involved in Social Media product production, interviews with the media and internal media briefings.
  • How to communicate key messages through the media and trains defence personnel who are likely to be interviewed by broadcast media to deliver their messages effectively.

Day 2: The New Media Landscape: Communicating effectively for Defence and Law Enforcement
  • Examine different communication approaches and techniques.
  • Review the best practice approaches to writing for various mediums.
  • Learn about new social media channels and identify which channels are suitable for your organisation.
  • Understand the impact of social media and exposing your brand and person to risk.
  • Establish your identity online: how to use social media to establish yourself as a thought leader.
  • Explore the attributes that contribute to becoming an effective communicator.
Day 3: Stakeholder Relations for Defence and Law Enforcement: Maximising your influence and impact
  • Learn how to develop the right communications strategies and on-target messaging to engage with stakeholders.
  • Understand how building relationships with journalists can contribute to securing press coverage for your communication initiatives.
  • Learn how to leverage relationships with command centres, the community, media, partners and stakeholders to accomplish a mission effectively.
  • Explore how communication can be used to influence change within and beyond your network.
Day 4: Media Relations for Defence and Law Enforcement Officials
  • Learn about the ethics of engaging with journalists and the implications that have on operations.
  • Develop an understanding of the critical information to be included in briefing books, materials and reports.
  • Implement a strategy to respond to news inquiries.
  • Explore the guidelines on releasing information to the media and the impact on live or ongoing operations
Day 5: Public Speaking and the Psychology of Persuasion: Managing Law Enforcement and Defence Press and Media Appearances
  • Learn how to prepare senior officials and command for media interviews and appearances.
  • Learn how to prepare for a press conference
  • Establish an understanding of how language, tone and body language can impact your presentation.
  • Learn about your personal characteristics and traits and the impact they have on your public speaking style.
  • Scenario Planning: participate in a press conference
